Aftercare Tips for Root Canal

A root canal removes the damaged nerve tissue and bacteria from your tooth. During your root canal, your dentist will clean out the damaged tissue and disinfect the tooth. There are several things you can do after your root canal to maintain your dental health. Listed below are some tips.

Brush Your Teeth

Dentists often recommend brushing and flossing at least twice a day after the procedure. This prevents food particles from getting stuck inside the tooth, which can cause infection or abscessing. It is important to brush gently around the affected area. A soft-bristled toothbrush should be used to avoid irritating the gums. Flossing should be done regularly to remove debris from the root surface.

Take Medications

The dentist will prescribe medication to be used after the root canal procedure. It should be taken as directed to prevent infection and other complications. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed if the treated area is infected. Patients should finish taking the medication even if symptoms have disappeared. Doing so helps reduce the risk of re-infection.

Do Not Chew on Hard Foods

After a root canal, avoid chewing hard foods on the affected side for at least a week. This includes ice, candy, and nuts. These can make the tooth more sensitive or irritate the area further.

Avoid Using Straw

Avoid drinking from a straw for the first several days. Sucking on straws can dislodge the blood clot that has formed over the treatment site. This can expose the underlying nerves to bacteria and debris. It is best to drink beverages through a glass straw instead.

Avoid Chewing With Treated Tooth

You should avoid biting and chewing with that tooth until your restoration is complete. If you chew on it too soon, you may damage the restoration. If your bite feels uneven, call your dentist to make an appointment to have it checked before the problem gets worse.

If the tooth that was treated has a crown on it, it’s important that you continue to brush along the gum line just as you do with the rest of your natural teeth. This will help prevent an infection from occurring around the crown that could damage it. You should also continue to practice good oral hygiene habits, like flossing once a day and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash once per day.
